Useful Info and Suggestions on Dog Walking

Dogs need exercise, and the activity they love more than any other is walking. However, many dog owners shirk the responsibility. Perhaps they simply don’t have time, or maybe they don’t realize how important it is to walk their dogs.

Others give it a go, but give up after being hauled around the neighborhood one time too often by an unruly dog. If any of the aforementioned scenarios describes you, pay attention, because I’d like to share a piece of information that every dog owner should know.

“Dogs must be walked!”

Any dog trainer will tell you that daily exercise is a must for all dogs. For some, 30 minutes to an hour may be enough, for others 2 hours will just be getting started. But the point is they all need exercise, and walking should be the core component of that.

But dog walking is more than simply clipping on the dog’s lead and heading out the door. A few simple guidelines will make it an altogether more enjoyable experience, for you and the dog.

Here are some best practices you can follow;

* Don’t walk your dog during the hottest time of the day as they overheat quite easily. If you need to walk when it’s hot be sure to have some water along for the dog to drink.

* Walk with your dog beside you, not in front of you. Allowing the dog to always be in the lead gives him the notion that he is the pack leader.

* Keep a relaxed grip on the lead at all times. Never pull back and get into a tug-a-war with your dog. If he pulls, stop the walk and wait for him to calm down before carrying on.

* Don’t let your dog lead you where he wants to go. You control the walk and decide where to go, when to stop, and when to head for home.

* Avoid other dogs. You never know how two dogs are going to react towards one another. Quite often these encounters will end up in a fight. If you have a small dog and a large dog approaches, pick you dog up and turn your back. If your dog is large, turn and walk in the opposite direction.

You also don’t know if a strange dog has been vaccinated and if it is carrying any diseases that may be passed to your dog.

* Choose a collar and leash (or a harness) that is comfortable for your dog, but that also gives you complete control over the dog. Also make sure that your dog is wearing an id tag, just in case he gets away from you.

If your dog does escape, the id tag will hopefully result in him being returned safely. For an extra level of security you may also want to have your dog micro-chipped.

* Last but not least, – enjoy! The walk is an excellent opportunity for you to bond with your dog. It’s also a great work-out, both for you and the dog. Your dog will be calmer and obedience training will be easier. And your dog will love you for it.

Helpful Dog Travel Advice

A holiday with your dog can be a really fun time for both of you. But it requires foresight and a bit of planning to make it so.

You can start by doing your homework into what is required to take your dog to the countries you plan to visit. For some countries, these restrictions are severe. The UK for example enforces a 6 month quarantine on animals that are not on the PETS scheme.

But even countries that are more pet friendly have requirements that must be met.

Then there’s the accommodation issue. If you are planning on staying at a hotel or resort, you’ll want to find a pet-friendly one at your destination and book early.

Happily, pet-friendly hotels have become a lot more popular in recent times.

And then there are the travel arrangements. Traveling with a pet by air or rail can be quite a challenge, so use a specialized pet travel company to make the arrangements for you. This will ensure that you avoid costly, and possibly even tragic mistakes.

If however, you are going to be traveling by car you can make the arrangements yourself, and there are quite a few things you’ll have to take care of.

For starters, you’ll need a way of restraining your dog in the car, either a dog carrier, or a specialized doggy seat belt. This not only makes sense, but is a legal requirement in some countries.

It is also important to remember that dogs become dehydrated quite easily. Take a water bowl and plenty of water along, and never leave your dog in a parked car, especially in warm weather.

Also, remember to pack leashes, harnesses, collars, toys, dog bed and anything else your dog will need. You’ll also want to plan your journey and identify accommodation en route that allows dogs. And while we’re talking about stops, remember regular comfort stops for your dog to use the bathroom and stretch his legs.

And it doesn’t stop there. Once you reach your destination make sure that your dog wears an id tag, with your local phone number, at all times. For international trips you will have to have your dog micro-chipped, but it never hurts to have extra security.

You should also carry a photograph of your dog with you, in case your dog gets lost.

Find out where the local vet and animal emergency center are. In case of emergency you’ll need this information close at hand.

Obey all local animal regulations and laws. This will normally mean that you have to pick up after your dog, as well as keeping on a leash in public places. It is just good manners to do this anyway, even if the law doesn’t require it.

Now, you may be thinking that this is an awful lot of work. But following these tips will ensure that your vacation with your dog goes off without a hitch. And that makes it well worth the effort.

Dog Training Tips and Secrets for the Beginner

If you’re looking to get a dog for your family, but aren’t sure how to train it, make sure to educate yourself first! Proper dog training is essential for a happy and fun addition to the family. Read on for some basic tips on how to get your puppy obedient. Click here to know more about crate training a puppy today.

Dogs sometimes make mistakes because they can’t do otherwise. It’s your job to figure out why they can’t. Consider an older dog, for example, that has been completely housebroken for years. If all of a sudden it starts relieving itself in the house something is wrong. The dog is likely sick and should be seen by a veterinarian.

It’s maddening to come home to a house full of chewed up couch cushions and tipped over waste baskets! If you have to leave your pooch alone all day, he can become bored and lonely. Try exercising him more in the morning and at night when you get home. You may even consider a pet walker to walk him during the day if finances allow. You can sometimes train your dog to stop destructive behavior just by tiring him out!

Stop bad behavior before it starts by setting up your dog’s environment to discourage bad behavior. This may mean crate-training dogs that have issues with going to the bathroom outside, or limiting access to certain rooms for dogs with destructive tendencies. No matter what route you take, your dog will be safer if his environment is suited to his quirks.

When training your dog, make sure to keep him active. Dogs get bored just as easily as humans, so make sure you take him out for walks, runs and any special classes that may be offered by local pet stores or animal shelters. Exercise will help him improve not just physically, but also mentally.

Working on your dog’s recall is essential. Your dog should learn to return to you when called no matter what is going on. Build this essential behavior in steps so your dog learns to obey despite distractions. Recall may save your dog’s life one day, so don’t skip out on this training, even though it can be time-consuming and challenging.

Start training your dog as early in its life as possible, but not younger than about seven weeks. This helps build an early bond between you as the owner and trainer and the dog. However, starting too early will simply overstress the dog; a very young puppy won’t learn anything from training sessions.

Your dog is the product of many generations of domestication and breeding. If you have a purebred or mixed dog, tailor your training efforts to your dog’s personality. For example, herding dogs may need more work to release energy that would otherwise go to herding efforts to make something like taking leashed walks easier.

To properly train a dog, you must be consistent at all times. Never allow your dog to partake in such activities as pulling you on walks or jumping all over people. Don’t ever give into your pet’s really cute face. In doing so, your dog will become confused and not know what is right or wrong in that particular situation and will do what he/she wants.

When potty training your new puppy, keep him on a strict feeding schedule. Offer food twice a day, at the same time each day, and take your puppy out to eliminate shortly after finishing the meal. Young puppies often need to use the bathroom quickly after a meal. Giving your dog the opportunity to go outside will get him on a schedule and help to prevent accidents.

Taking a dog on a daily walk, or even two, is an essential part of obedience training. a dog without exercise is not a calm dog, and it’s very hard to train a dog in an excited state. It is best to take them out before any rigorous training exercise so that they are tired and in a submissive state when you begin to teach them.

Training your dog to “speak” can help eliminate annoying excessive barking. Dogs bark to alert the pack of threats. Since they bark by default, it is a good idea to teach them to “speak”, because then they will understand how to not bark. Start by telling your dog to “speak” when it barks at the telephone ringing. Then, when the dogs pauses, tell the dog “quiet”. This will help the dog distinguish a barking state from a non-barking state.

Introducing your dog to other pets that already live in the home should be accomplished slowly and patiently. Start by allowing the animals to sniff each other through closed doors. After a few view days, allow gradual interaction with close supervision. By preventing fast, traumatic introductions, your pets will live together more peacefully.

Dogs in the big city need specialized training to handle the circumstances the city brings up. Consider socializing your dog to a large gathering in small doses before a move to the city. Walking your dog on a leash by large, calm gatherings and rewarding them heartily will help your dog make positive associations with lots of people.

Training your dog is key in order to have a happy, calm, and mess-free household. Education is essential for anyone embarking on the training process, as it is necessary to learn what works with canines and what does not. Take advantage of the advice in this article, and start the process of efficient training today. You can train you dog better by knowing more about http://puppyobediencetrainings.com/dog-psychology/ now.

Appreciation of Dog Psychology for a Happier Home Life

Dog Psychology is not as simple as it is with human patients, primarily for the reason that dogs can not express themselves or their impulses. So, trainers, veterinarians, dog psychologists and owners must seek to recognize what induces the animal’s behavior. By doing so, they can correct any sort of dog conduct concerns they may have, which may be stress and anxiety, aggression, or unsuitable elimination. Regrettably, far too many dogs have been given away or put down as a consequence of these troubles, so fixing them is definitely a good thing.

Aggression and Biting

Aggression is a huge problem since a pat can be very dangerous. There are multiple reasons why dogs behave like this, yet there is no one distinct treatment. Figuring out the reason or the source behind their barks, bites and many other signs of aggression can deal with the issue at last. Below are some root causes for aggression:

Fear
Predatory behavior Pain
Medical concernsTerritorial defence

Behaviourists will interview the owner and talk about the concerns at hand in an endeavor to determine the elements that encourage the puppy to act so horribly. A physical observation is a must to ensure that the animal is not experiencing a medical issue. Therapies include proper puppy coaching and avoidance of any sort of conditions that could introduce this aggressive nature.

Separation Anxiety

Many dog owners will complain of separation anxiety which causes their animals to destroy personal possessions, howl incessantly and go about improper elimination when by themselves. Dogs are sociable pets that can commonly endure sadness when they are by themselves. Therapy for this kind of problem commonly includes behavioural alteration and medication.

Fear

Just as human beings, dogs may be frightened of things, like thunderstorms, particular colors or items, sounds or people. Anxiety in dogs will likely show up as the following:

Defecation

Urination

Whining

Hiding

Growling

It is not unusual for these behaviors to intensify if the anxiety comes to be more intense. Although anxiety is not unhealthy, a show of inappropriate fear from everyday occurrences is a problem that must be dealt with. Therapy for fear in dogs includes desensitisation treatment and medication. However, desensitisation can solely be done with a certified veterinary behaviourist, else the anxiety may worsen.

Housebreaking Problems

Potty training is incredibly critical and is very straightforward to accomplish in most cases. However, complications can take place. The initial thing to do is ensure that there is no medical problem. If not, and it is a behavioural issue. Therapy will involve medication and/or desensitisation treatment. Understanding dog psychology will save lives and create happier homes.

Best Dog Training Techniques – Getting Results That Count

It is pretty amazing how much of a difference dog training techniques can have, of course you have to consider certain factors.

Dog training techniques are really not that hard to understand. A few basic principles is all you need to convey. Communicating effectively with your dog is very important. Patience is also a virtue but must be used. Each time you try a new technique, it more than likely will not work initially. If after 10 times it doesn’t work, you need to try again. Your dog will figure it out. The following are some tips to help make training your dog as painless as possible.

If you have a puppy, you should teach them to not bite as soon as you can. Very often, full grown dogs who bite were never taught not to do this when they were small. A loud yelp is typically what occurs when a puppy bites another one. To stop your puppy from biting, mimic the behavior of the mother or other puppy; you can also use human words so that the puppy responds appropriately. Your puppy’s behavior will be modified by doing this type of social interaction. Doing crate training can also work in your favor by placing the puppy in the crate when bites you. Instead of biting, the puppy will learn not to as long as you take care of this problem early on.

If you want a very well behaved dog, giving them plenty of exercise is a great way to make them more responsive to what you were trying to teach. Any dog that is lazy or that that’s not enough exercise will definitely be more difficult to train. If your dog is unable to exercise enough, they may bark frequently and also show aggression regularly. You must initiate the playtime. If you do, your dog will respond in a favorable way. Larger dogs, and smaller dogs, both need to exercise at least once every day.

They should get a minimum of two good walks per day, and also play time. This will make it much easier to train your dog and keep him well behaved.

If you have a dog who likes to dig up your yard, there are a few techniques that can help to curb this behavior. There are various sprays that are made to make an area undesirable to dogs, and often other animals as well. If you have a garden, you can spray this in that area and the dog will avoid it. Many people will use a fence to quarantine certain areas so that their dog cannot enter and dig. It’s best to give your dog an area where he’s allowed to dig, such as a sandbox. To make the dog happy, also include a few toys and bones that they can play with. Using these strategies, your dog will be able to dig, but will not get in trouble for doing so. It is a win-win situation. There are many dog training techniques that can help you get the behavior you want from your dog. No two dogs are alike, and some learn faster than others. If your dog doesn’t respond well to a particular approach, try to find an alternative method. With patience, however, your dog will eventually respond the way you want.

Get Your Dog to Do Want You Want

Training a dog may be one of the most rewarding experiences a pet owner can have. To see their dog sit, stay, and roll over on command is a thing of wonder. However, this sort of obedience and training doesn’t happen overnight. Here are some tips to help you get your dog doing tricks. Click here to know more about clicker dog training today.

In order to properly train a well-behaved dog you should avoid having two people give your dog two different orders at the same time. This will only frustrate you and your dog because there is no way a dog can perform different orders made by two different people. People can’t even do this. Therefore, you should make sure that only one person is giving one order to your dog at any particular time.

Do not train your dog when you are angry or stressed. Not only will you have less patience, but dogs are incredibly receptive to their owner’s moods. By skipping training when you are not at your best, you can be sure when you do train, it will be much more effective.

Dogs and puppies that exhibit play biting behavior can be both irritating and dangerous. Although play biting is a normal dog behavior, it is important to teach your dog that mouthy play is unacceptable. When your puppy nips you playfully, make a loud noise and move away, ignoring the puppy. This will teach bite inhibition in a way the puppy understands.

When you are training your doggy friend, use what is known as primary reinforcement. Primary reinforcement uses something that is inherent for the dog to love as a reward for good behavior. Primary reinforcements include using food as treats and rubbing your dog’s belly. This will teach your dog how to get something he already wants.

When correcting bad behavior that your dog displays, you should always make sure that your corrections are short and well-defined. If your corrections are vague, your dog will not understand how to improve its bad behavior. This will frustrate both you and your pet. If your corrections are clear and easily understood, your dog is likely to make the correction.

To make training your dog effective, refrain from attempting to train it when you’re mad at it. If you are upset, there is no way you can give fair orders to your dog, because you will let your emotions take over any rational thoughts. Therefore, you should wait until you have calmed down before attempting to train your dog.

Only work on one command at a time. Focusing on one command allows your dog to really hone that skill and get it right. By trying to learn too much at once, you risk confusing your dog, and they may have more difficulty remembering which behavior goes with which command.

Dog owners should learn to listen to their pets. When a dog indicates that he is uncomfortable in a situation, such as with another dog, it’s never good to push him further than he wants to go. Take a step back and re-evaluate the situation, or come back to it at a later time.

Socialization skills are an important part of a well-rounded training program for any canine companion. Learning to get along with adults, children and other pets makes for a happy dog that is welcome in his surroundings. Socializing your dog is easy and can be incorporated into your daily activities. An evening dog walk, trip to the park or visit to the pet store can provide a great opportunity to expose your dog to short interactions with neighbors and their pets, while getting much needed exercise and bonding time with you.

Positive reinforcement is the proven key to success in dog training. Figure out what reward will motivate your pet and use it. Strong smelling meats and cheese are usually very popular. It is imperative to always have treats handy when training. However, it is equally important to watch the caloric intake.

When you begin training a dog, never assume they will not bite you just because you are a human and you think you are the leader. And untrained dog may think you are part of his pack, but may think he is the leader. Understanding what alpha behavior you need to show your dog will help your dog understand you are the leader. When your dog doesn’t understand your human behavior, even a calm dog can bite you.

Never punish positive behavior. If your dog successfully goes to the bathroom outside, and then you leave him, it is as if you are punishing him after he has achieved the results that you desire. Instead, reward him by playing ball with him for a while or rubbing his belly.

Make your expectations realistic. It is never too late to change a dog’s behavior. However, it takes time to do so. For example, if you have allowed your dog to do a certain behavior since he was a puppy, and you no longer want him to do it, it will take longer to undo the behavior. Having patience and realistic expectations makes training a dog to undo or learn a new behavior easier.

Target training can serve as a basis for more advanced tricks. Target training is teaching your dog to touch an object (the target) with his nose or paw. The object can be any item, but once you pick something to use (some trainers use a ball mounted on the end of a stick), stick to it consistently. Once your dog has learned to target the object, you can shape his behavior by placing the object near the next task you want him to learn. Targeting can be used to teach a dog to do everything from closing doors to turning the light switch on or off.

Take care to not punish any signs of desirable behavior. For example, if your puppy goes outside like they should, you should not immediately leave them. If they want to be near you and then you have just up and left, it will confuse them because they did something right and they may feel like they are being punished.

By way of conclusion, the rewarding feeling of teaching a dog to obey your commands is blissful. To watch them do what you say can bring a smile to your face. If you practice, and have the right advice, it actually can be rather simple to train them. This article offered plenty of advice to help. A few people could be professional trainers, whose dogs appear constantly in shows, while others could be new animal owners, fighting with a dog that’s showing the results of a disturbed past. But, there are some key ideas everyone can gain advantage from learning and testing. You can use these strategies to learn a few stuff that may aid both you and your dog to experience more fun and to create a stronger bond.

If your dog is a large bruiser, you must be easy on your hands and certain of getting a good powerful leash by employing a horse lead rope as a leash. These come in the traditional 6′ length in soft cotton or synthetic rope with a very robust snap being attached. They come in a variety of attractive colors and are sturdy and powerful.

Hear your dog. Don’t demand that he would greet another person, dog, or animal if he appears troubled. It is important to realise that there is a reason he’s uncomfortable, and you want to consider it. If your dog is implying that he’s troubled, don’t force the issue as it can lead to more serious problems down the line.

Always remember that it takes patience and time to coach a dog. Other dogs pick up things fast, while others would take some time longer. Each dog will have a learning pace of their own, so be certain to be conscious of your dog’s pace. For dog training advice, try to be as positive as possible when working with him so that he thinks it’s a fun activity to do with you and will look forward to your training sessions.

How to Cope With an Over-Excitable Dog

Most dogs have a zest for life that puts even the most active human in the shade. However, if your dog is an uncontrollable ball of energy, there are three probable reasons – lack of exercise, anxiety and lack of leadership.

The good news is that these are all things that you can directly influence.

Helping A Bored Dog

A common factor for many over-excitable dogs is that they are simply bored. The dog gets no regular physical or mental stimulation. He lays around all day waiting for your return, and when you arrive he explodes into action.

Tackling the problem is easy – exercise your dog. All dogs need it, and unfortunately too few get enough of it.

How much exercise does a dog need? Well that depends on the dog. Age, breed and health are all factors. Your little Peke will be quite happy with a stroll around the garden, but that’s just not going to cut it with a Lab, let alone a Border Collie.

Tackling Separation Anxiety

A common cause for over-excited behavior is separation anxiety. This is particularly true of dogs that are left home while the owner goes to work. Here are some things you can do to address the behavior;

*Stop Rewarding Your Dog – By this I mean stop giving attention, whether positive or negative, while the dog is running around, jumping up and barking. Once the dog has calmed down, give attention and maybe a treat to re-enforce the desired behavior.

*Change Your Routine – I’ll bet your dog knows your routine even better than you do, and when he notices the familiar things you do before leaving, it sets off his anxiety. By changing your routine, even slightly, you can break the cycle and affect the behavior.

*Restrict him to a small area – A dog that is left alone in a large empty house will always become anxious. Restricting him to a smaller area and providing a secure “den”, like a dog crate, will calm him down.*Keep him Occupied – Last but not least, give him something to do while you’re away. A chew toy, or a couple of treats hidden around the room should do the trick.

Provide Leadership

A dog that is uncertain of his place in the pack hierarchy will always be anxious, because he’s not sure how to behave. What can you do about it? Give him some basic obedience training like “sit”, “stay” and “down”.

Training provides discipline and mental stimulation. It also establishes your leadership. Once your dog accepts this, he’ll naturally calm down.

These three actions should have a calming effect on most dogs. Remember, though that some dogs are just naturally more excitable than others. Some will never calm down completely, regardless of what you do.

The Proper Age to Begin Training Your Puppy.

Many dogs like to dig, but you can stop this behavior if you know the proper way to train your dog. Like most dogs they get bored easily from their daily routine and can often turn to unacceptable behavior such as digging. This article contains a number of tips on how to prevent your dog from digging that will keep you happy and your dog from tearing up your yard. Want to know more about puppy obedience training, then read the advices below now.

Some dogs are so scared of thunderstorms that they are literally a danger to themselves. If your dog has an extreme fear of thunder, speak to your veterinarian. Your veterinarian may recommend and prescribe a mild sedative to give your dog before a storm rolls in. This is often a last-ditch effort when behavior modification cannot handle the problem alone, but it is often beneficial to a dog’s quality of life if the problem is severe enough.

When you start training your dog, make sure that you aren’t so focused on making them a good dog that you just ignore their basic needs in the process. They still require basic care like food, water, a place to sleep, and a place to go to the bathroom. They are still your responsibility.

The Alpha in the pack always eats first which means you eat before your dog. This allows you to establish your leadership with your animal and by feeding your dog after yourself, you can monitor the time that food is available and control his feeding habits. This behavior is normal for your dog and expected from the leader.

Your dog wants someone to be in charge. If it isn’t you, your dog may try to take the job. Dogs want leaders who provide stability and security. Be a good leader by being consistent, competent, firm, gentle, kind, and a good provider. Your dog will be happy to follow you!

It is important to make your dog training sessions fun and positive. Dogs love to play, so if you mix up the training with toys and fun chases they will be much more enthusiastic about your training efforts. A fun training session will be remembered much more quickly by your pet.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog is to ensure that you make it absolutely clear to your dog what it is that your are disciplining it for. This is important to avoid confusion and to teach the dog what is desired and what is undesired behavior. An example of what to avoid is hitting your dog hours past and in a different room from where it shredded your couch.

Dog training techniques will need to vary according to the dog. If you find that your dog does not respond to the reward of a treat, you need to find another kind of reward that he is going to be willing to work hard for. If giving treats does work for your dog, you are going to be able to use that in many situations.

Run away from your dog if he gets loose. It is easy to panic when a dog breaks loose from his leash or escapes the house or yard. Resist your instinct to chase the dog. Dogs love to play chase, and going after him will only encourage him to go further away. Instead, get your dog’s attention, and then run AWAY from him. This uses the same instinctual love of the chase game to your advantage. Instead of you chasing your dog, the game becomes to chase you. Be sure to praise him thoroughly when he “catches” you!

To get your dog to crawl on command, have him start in a lying position. If you are tall enough, or your dog is small enough, place your leg, heel on the floor, knee up, in front of him. Take a treat and lead him underneath your leg. If your dog cannot fit under your leg, find another low threshold, like a chair, that he can crawl under. This makes him have to scoot forward to get the treat and will reduce his urge to stand up to follow your hand.

Keep your dog up-to-date on his check-ups. If you are finding your dog is having difficulty with some aspects of training, or has regressed in his training, make sure he is in good health. Dogs are very adept at hiding pain and discomfort. So many times behavioral changes are the only clue that there is a health issue. For example, aggression can be a sign of pain, and sudden regression in-house training can signal a urinary tract infection.

To train a dog careful thought is required by the owner. Before beginning to train a dog one should plan out what their command words are going to be to be the most effective. Words that are not commonly used will help them stick out for the dog. If one knows another language that can also offer more words and sounds to use in training the dog.

For your dog to understand what you are punishing them for, you need to catch them misbehaving. If you reprimand a dog for something that happened hours ago, chances are your dog will not make the connection. And if you choose to ignore your dog to show that you are mad, do not ignore it for more than a few minutes.

When training your dog, make sure to enforce all commands you give. Do not repeat them over and over, but issue them once firmly and make sure your pet follows through. Do not let your dog ignore a command or else he will think that you are not serious and will disregard most of the training session.

When you take the time to build a valuable relationship with your dog, you are investing in a task that will reward you for years to come. Enjoy the great feeling of love and admiration that emanates from your pup and experience the type of dog that everyone wants to have.
