Pet Health Care for Special Days: Halloween
There’s no denying how much fun can be had with the family on Halloween, but dogs and cats are members of the family too, so try and take time out to think about pet health care during your celebrations.
Remember that all the fun and noise associated with a Halloween party, if you are having one, can be distressing to cats and other older pets. If you will be having guests around for the evening, particularly rowdy children, find a quiet space where your pet feels comfortable to hide away and relax until the commotion is over.
Halloween might be a great excuse for us all to enjoy a sweet or two, but remember that many of the treats we enjoy as a guilty pleasure can cause serious pet health care problems or even death in our beloved animals. The major example here is chocolate which can kill a dog.
Dogs and cats might also find sweet wrappers to be an attractive plaything. As well as the obvious choking hazard that wrappers can present, if they are swallowed there could be internal damage to the digestive system and certainly some discomfort.
Many pet owners choose to dress their animal in cute, or scary, outfits at Halloween, if you do please think about its affect on pet health care. A dog that cannot breathe, eat, drink, bark, move or go to the toilet easily in their outfit will be distressed and may become unwell.
Of course, keep in mind too that it isn’t just pet health care that is at risk when animals are around at Halloween. Watch out for dogs which have become overexcited knocking over burning decorative candles and not only injuring themselves but causing a fire hazard too.
